The probe of Mikrosize’s ultrasonic thickness gauge for coating measurement emits high-frequency ultrasonic pulses, which travel through the coating with the help of a couplant. When ultrasonic signals hit coating boundaries with different material densities, part of the energy bounces back as reflected echo pulses, while the remaining waves keep travelling through the material.
These reflected echo signals go back to the probe and get captured by the built-in sensor. The device processes returned signals and calculates the travel time of ultrasound inside the target coating.
With the formula: Thickness H = V × T / 2, where V stands for known coating sound velocity and T is the ultrasonic propagation time measured by the unit, users can acquire accurate coating-thickness readings. This core technology underpins the reliable measuring performance of Mikrosize instruments.
